Germany: Engelbergtunnel (A8/A81) full closure 7–8 November
Engelbergtunnel near Leonberg closes both ways from 21:00 on 7 Nov to 12:00 on 8 Nov 2026 (CET). Parallel A8 pavement works run until 05:00 on 9 Nov.
In Germany, the Engelbergtunnel on the A8 / A81 corridor near Leonberg will be fully closed in both directions from 21:00 on 7 November 2026 to 12:00 on 8 November 2026 (CET, UTC+1). Autobahn GmbH (South-West branch) published the notice on 2026-11-04.
Who is affected
The full closure covers all traffic through the Engelbergtunnel in both directions (Karlsruhe / Munich and Heilbronn). Separately, from 20:00 on 6 November to 05:00 on 9 November, Autobahn GmbH continues pavement renewal on the A8 toward Karlsruhe at Autobahndreieck Leonberg: traffic uses the side carriageway, and the Leonberg-Ost entry toward Karlsruhe / Heilbronn is closed (diversion via Leonberg-West). On the night of 6 November 20:00 to 7 November 05:00, traffic from the A8 from Karlsruhe cannot use the link onto the A81 toward Heilbronn and is diverted on U1 through Leonberg and Ditzingen. For abnormal loads (GST), Autobahn GmbH refers to regional conditions; this notice does not state a fine amount.
When
| Measure | Time (CET) |
|---|---|
| A8 pavement works / Leonberg-Ost entry closed | 2026-11-06 20:00 – 2026-11-09 05:00 |
| Night restriction A8→A81 Heilbronn link | 2026-11-06 20:00 – 2026-11-07 05:00 |
| Engelbergtunnel full closure both ways | 2026-11-07 21:00 – 2026-11-08 12:00 |
Times are German winter time (CET, UTC+1). On the night of 6–7 November, traffic from Munich or Heilbronn can still use the western tube in both directions, Autobahn GmbH says.
What it means for trips
Transit on the Stuttgart–Karlsruhe–Heilbronn corridor over the weekend must follow signed diversions (U1 / U11b / U18 through Leonberg and Ditzingen). Expect longer journeys and possible urban congestion; the source does not give an exact delay in minutes. Extra kilometres can pressure driving and rest time. Plan the diversion early, especially for loads that need a Sunday morning arrival.
Context
The Engelbergtunnel upgrade is in its final phase: Autobahn GmbH is combining safety tests of new operating systems with pavement works at Leonberg to limit separate closures. Until now, night traffic often used one tube; the 7–8 November window is a full two-way closure. It overlaps other German weekend Autobahn works, so use the Germany truck driving ban guide and the roads alerts archive when planning diversions and Sunday bans.
What to check
- Whether the trip must cross A8/A81 at Leonberg between Saturday evening and Sunday noon; if yes, retimed or follow the signed diversion.
- Driver hours with extra distance through Leonberg / Ditzingen.
- Fresh Autobahn GmbH updates before departure: works can shift with the test schedule.
- Whether GST / oversize loads face separate limits on this section.
